In a rewarding end to the year, our work on Horsey Windpump was recognised with an award in the Conservation category at the Norfolk Design & Craftsmanship Awards 2019.
Horsey Windpump, located in Horsey, a village on The Broads near Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, was struck by lightning in 1943 and had been inoperative ever since. We worked closely with millwright Tim Whiting to take as near an approach to “conservative repair” as a working machine will allow. As a result, the cap and sails can now react to the wind and preserve themselves against storms.
The windpump is under the ownership of the National Trust, who allow visitors to explore the five storeys of the Grade II* listed building, and enjoy the view across The Broads from the cap floor.
The Norfolk Design & Craftsmanship Awards is a biennial ceremony that recognises outstanding craftsmanship and design. Comprised of The Norfolk Association of Architects, Norwich Society and Civic Voice, the DCA issues nominations and awards that recognise both the finished project, as well as all those involved.
