Private chapel in Suffolk

This private chapel in Suffolk showcases a blend of traditional craftsmanship and innovative design. The chapel draws inspiration from Suffolk’s coastal heritage, taking on the the form of an upturned fishing boat with a distinctive round tower and intricately crafted gables.

Nestled in the rural Suffolk landscape, the chapel’s design integrates with its surroundings. The boat-inspired form, combined with carefully selected materials, is a nod to the area’s rich heritage as a coastal county, accomplished with modern engineering techniques. The external walls are constructed from solid masonry, featuring locally sourced Norfolk flint alongside Purbeck, Portland and Clipsham stones. These natural materials were shaped and fitted with exceptional precision for both durability and visual appeal.

The structure’s design posed unique challenges, including the leaning, tapering round tower and the use of curved stonework. To address these complexities, hidden stainless-steel supports were used to secure the flints at corners, achieving seamless returns without taking away from the building’s visual integrity. Every coping stone on the roof and parapets was shaped in two planes, with joints meticulously calibrated to fit the curved surfaces.

Internally, the stone flooring was carefully selected and flawlessly installed. The project brought together craftspeople from across the UK, including specialist contractor Brown and Ralph Ltd and flint supplier Flintman Company, whose skills and expertise were key in bringing the design to life.

This chapel, designed in collaboration with Matthew Seaborn and Donald Insall Associates, is an example of the enduring value of collaboration and attention to detail. Its design respects local heritage while showcasing the possibilities of contemporary craftsmanship, resulting in a timeless addition to its setting.

The chapel was named the winner in the New Build Traditional Stonemasonry category at the 2024 Natural Stone Awards. This accolade celebrates the incredible skill of the craftspeople involved and fortifies Whitworth’s reputation for delivering architectural solutions that combine innovation, sustainability and respect for the local context.
