The project was to construct a small private chapel in the grounds of the client’s house in Ipswich. We were provided with a concept design produced by others which we developed into a final building solution. The site was surrounded by trees so the building sits on a raft to avoid any damage to roots. Laminated timber beams were formed for the roof and floor plates which creates the unusual shape with timber stud work forming the walls. The external timber cladding provides a cost-effective and simple envelope to the building blending in with its position in the landscape. There is a very low heat requirement due to the high levels of insulation incorporated in the design and heating when required is provided by an underfloor electric mat.
