Inspired by the local landscape and architectural traditions, the chapel’s design draws on the idea of an upturned Suffolk fishing boat, complete with a distinctive round tower and intricate gables. Its innovative structure and exceptional craftsmanship were highlighted by the award judges as standout features.

Craftsmanship and innovation recognised by Natural Stone Awards

The external walls of the chapel are constructed from solid masonry, using locally sourced Norfolk flint and a selection of natural stones, including Purbeck, Portland and Clipsham. These materials were shaped and fitted with meticulous precision, while the tower insulation was carefully profiled to meet modern building control requirements without compromising the building’s aesthetic.

The judges praised the “outstanding” quality of the flintwork and stone dressings, commending the skill of specialist contractor Brown and Ralph Ltd, and flint supplier Flintman Company. They also noted the innovative techniques used to overcome the challenges posed by the chapel’s unconventional form, including the leaning, tapering round tower and curved stonework. Hidden stainless-steel supports were used to secure the flints at corners, achieving seamless returns without visible distortion.

Design rooted in its Suffolk surroundings

The chapel’s design fits in with its rural Suffolk setting, with its boat-inspired form echoing the area’s coastal heritage. The judges highlighted how the structure “sits beautifully into the landscape,” while its design reflects both tradition and contemporary engineering.

The attention to detail extended to the roof and parapets, where every coping stone was shaped in two planes, with each joint carefully calibrated to fit the curved surfaces. Internally, the stone flooring was equally celebrated for its precise selection and flawless finish.
