Orange Triangle

Listed Extension, Kersey

Bridge Cottage, a Grade II Listed 16th-century home in the heart of Kersey, has been carefully extended to create a seamless link to a new studio space and a light-filled kitchen-dining area. The single-storey, double-gabled extension enhances the home’s connection to its beautiful gardens while respecting its historic character.

Project Overview

Sitting on “The Splash”, in the heart of the village of Kersey, is Bridge Cottage. This Grade II Listed home is a timber frame property with 16th century origins, which sits in a prominent location in the village.

As with many properties of this nature and in this village, the building would have originally hosted a shop, but has been a private dwelling for many years. 19th and 20th century adaptations to the rear of the house have provided a modest kitchen and utility room, and it was these that the client wished to adapt.

The brief was to create a link to the garage to the rear of the property, which was to become a studio, and to form a new kitchen-dining space to the back of the house with strong links to the beautiful gardens to the rear.

Due to the constraints of the existing building, including its height, a single-storey, double-gabled extension was designed at ground level with a valley roof between the two structures. One of the gables extends into the garage, creating a seamless link between the spaces.

Through the use of this vaulted design, and by maximising light through large sliding doors and full height glazing, it has been possible to create a large open-plan living space to the rear of this Listed cottage.

The planners were happy to support such an application, as it provided a design that respected the building’s forms and scale, whilst providing a subtly modern addition to the property.

Once planning was achieved, we worked with both the client and the builder to deliver the project through the construction stage.

This property is currently available as a holiday let.
