Underwood House

The local planning authority were of the opinion that such a prominent site should have a large property which makes a statement and the building was designed with this in mind. Despite having the planning officer’s recommendation for approval, the initial scheme was refused planning permission at committee as a result of strong local opposition. A planning appeal was then launched which proved successful and the building was constructed in 2014/15. The final design presents a traditional street frontage to complement its position in the village. From the elevated living area to the rear there are extensive views of the countryside beyond. Taking advantage of the sloped site the property is constructed over three floors with a  games room, plant and utility room in the basement. The ground floor contains a large living room, study and kitchen with four bedrooms and three bathrooms on the first floor. The building was designed with energy conservation in mind and achieved a high level of airtightness when tested on completion. Heating is provided via an air source heat pump and a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery further reduces the energy demand of the house. The end result is a large family home in the heart of the village, which has also pleased its local opposition.
