We are delighted to announce that Consultant Building Surveyor Tony Redman has been elected to the Fellowship of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA), a recognition of his outstanding contribution to the study and preservation of historic buildings.

Tony’s interest in the history of Suffolk’s architecture is long-standing. His research into the building stones used across the county has been particularly influential and culminated in his lavishly illustrated book, The Building Stones of Suffolk and the people who worked them, available from the Suffolk Institute for £30, including postage (SIAH members £20, plus £5 postage). The book is part history, part field guide, identifying over fifty stones used in Suffolk buildings and detailing the stonemasons who worked them, some of whom are being documented for the first time.
Qualified as a Chartered Building Surveyor, Tony became a consultant at Whitworth following his retirement in 2016. His expertise in historic building conservation – recognised by RICS since 1993 and by the Institute of Historic Building Conservation since 1998 – has informed over 1,000 inspections of churches across Suffolk and further afield, from Moscow to Transylvania. Tony’s work has been instrumental in establishing Whitworth’s reputation throughout Suffolk, Norfolk, and beyond.
Election to the FSA recognises distinction in understanding the human past. Fellows of the Society of Antiquaries include historians, archaeologists, curators, and others whose work has advanced knowledge of the material past. This honour reflects Tony’s dedication to historic buildings, his meticulous research, and his ongoing commitment to both Whitworth and his role as a self-supporting minister in the Anglican Church.
Tony will continue to work with Whitworth as a consultant, providing invaluable insight into the county’s architectural heritage.
