Architect and Surveying services in Bishop’s Stortford

Services in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire

Whitworth has a strong connection with Bishop’s Stortford, one which has continued to blossom across almost three decades. From 1993, Boniface Associates had established a healthy reputation for high-quality surveying within the area, particularly concerning historic building conservation. This reputation continued to flourish when the business merged with our architectural firm, previously known as The Whitworth Co-Partnership, at the turn of the millennium. Since then, we have provided comprehensive surveying and architectural services within Bishop’s Stortford and beyond.

We are lucky to occupy an office located in an area rich with architectural history. Once a Roman travelway, the settlement transformed throughout the Middle Ages and prospered greatly from the opening of the Stort Navigation canal system in 1769 and the connection to the railway in the mid-19th century.

Located in a popular commuter area, the town became ripe for development and continues to grow today, with increasing demand for housing in a variety of architectural styles. However, one of the most notable architectural features within the area is Waytemore Castle, a structure with a tempestuous thousand-year history, whose hilltop remains are now Grade I listed.

Our Bishop’s Stortford office is situated in Thremhall Park on Start Hill, which is easily accessible from the M11 and A120.

Here are just a few examples of the work we have done around the Bishops Stortford area. To find out more about other projects, please visit our portfolio.

Queen Anne's Summerhouse

Queen Anne’s Summerhouse

We helped to convert this previously disused, Grade II listed building into a low-key holiday home let, under the instruction of The Landmark Trust, who own the structure. The structure is thought to have been built in the early 1800s, when Queen Anne knighted Samuel Ongley, who owned the estate on which the summerhouse sits.

Hertforshire retail flats

Hertfordshire retail and flats

We opened the ground floor of this building into one unit, which was its original state before its division in the mid-1800s, as well as restoring the shopfront to its former aesthetic. The upper floors of the building were converted into flats to address a shortage of accommodation in the town, and close consultation with the appropriate authorities ensured that the requirements for fire escape and insulation were met without causing harm to the character or fabric of the listed building.

Bishops Stortford Hyde Hall office conversion

Hertfordshire office barn conversion

For this project, Whitworth was appointed as architect to undertake the conversion of two redundant farm buildings to form new lettable office accommodation. The main barn is a Grade II listed timber frame barn, and the smaller cart lodge was curtilage listed. Considerable renovation works were required to convert the two buildings, with both requiring extensive repairs.
