Starting life as a bungalow the brief for this project was to create a new 5 bedroom family home. With Georgian proportions and detailing to the front and a contemporary finish to the rear, this has created a double-sided house, with large open plan spaces inside.
The house is effectively a new build project but is a rural bungalow conversion.
The front elevation is a double-fronted one with a slate hip truth above. The roof detailing was considered carefully to provide a hidden gutter detail and the front elevation is rendered in EWI (external wall installation) system. The benefit of the system is that it allowed us to insulate the existing fabric while retaining the structure and not losing internal floor space or creating cold bridges.
The rear extension is clad in vertical cedar boarding and the structure is a timber frame construction, where the panels were made off-site and erected on-site, facilitating a speedy build process. A large lantern over the dining area and large areas of glazing to the rear elevation floor the main living space and kitchen with light. Whilst the master suite similarly benefits from a large glazed elevation to the roof apex with a balcony.
In 2023, Whitworth were approach by our client to sympathetically carry out the conversion of an existing 1980s garage, originally built to accommodate the previous owner’s Ferrari, to a new one-bedroom annexe accommodation.
Whitworth oversaw the restoration of the historic Martello Tower in Aldeburgh, the largest of its kind from the Napoleonic Wars.
